Recent studies indicate that in Australia more than a third of male inmates, and two thirds of females have hepatitis C.
A greater proportion than the non-correctional population also has hepatitis B. These figures equate to up to half of the total fulltime prison population (estimated to be around 25,000 persons).
Hepatitis Victoria delivers hepatitis education for prisoners, prison staff as well as a unique peer education program. The program aims to reduce the risk of transmission and increase awareness of and support for people with viral hepatitis in custodial settings.
