HEP Hero Uncle Jack Charles

Uncle Jack Charles

Aboriginal elder, artist, activist and winner of the Mark Farmer Award 2019

Uncle Jack was named a HEP Hero because of his devoted advocacy for people living with hepatitis C. He was passionate and encouraged people to be tested and seek treatment.

Uncle Jack worked with Hepatitis Victoria and other organisations in the sector such as VACCHO, appearing in health promotion videos, explaining his journey to hepatitis C treatment. Due to his work and dedication, he was awarded the 2019 Mark Farmer Memorial Award, for advocacy and raising awareness of viral hepatitis in the community

“You’ve got to be open and admit it to yourself,” Uncle Jack said in a Hepatitis Victoria video.

“There’s nothing to be frightened, shy and embarrassed about hep C. You need to get over that in order to move on.”

Uncle Jack’s message to others…

Together we can beat this virus! Don’t care what the rest of the world thinks, because once they see your journey, it will impact on your family’s journey, too…and they will pay more respect to you.

 

It is with great sadness, we announce the loss of Uncle Jack Charles. We recognise and are exceedingly grateful for his devoted contribution to the community.
