Resilience is the ability to bounce back from life’s obstacles and difficult situations. It’s about being able to handle stresses like illness, job troubles or relationship problems without giving up. Resilience isn’t just a thing you have or don’t have; resilience is a skill anyone can develop.
How do you work on increasing resilience and feeling well?
Developing resilience is an individual and personal process where over time you will figure out what works for you. It’s a mix of many different and overlapping aspects, including but not limited to self-care, mindfulness, and relationships and support networks. Within these aspects are a set of relevant skills:
- Learning to have a positive view of yourself and your abilities
- Managing strong emotions
- Problem-solving skills
- Setting realistic goals and motivating yourself to work towards them
- Communication skills and connecting to other people
Resilience isn’t necessarily about being able to succeed when facing an obstacle - it’s more about reframing the way you see the obstacle to accept that you aren’t always in control of the challenges that life throws at you, but you can control the way you deal with them. Resilience and feeling well is all about changing your mindset so that you’re empowered to bounce back, keep trying, and stand up for yourself in the face of adversity.
